The techniques involved in HE experiments thus cover a very wide spectrum of mechanics, electronics of all types, and computing techniques at the forefront of developments. HEP presents one of the major challenges to data storage and retrieval, making use of new systems of “data mining” and object oriented programming. All of these detectors and software techniques have been, and will continue to be, part of experimental HEP here at UCD. Research Interests: Experimental high-energy particle physics; detector development for particle physics.

Experimental High Energy Physics

The high energy physics group at UC Davis performs experiments around the world to study the fundamental building blocks of matter and their interactions. Colliders, neutrino beams, reactors, and direct detection experiments provide complementary sensitivity in the search for new phenomena about our universe at the deepest level. Research Interests: Experimental high energy physics, solid state detector physics, ASICS, Radiation hardness, data acquisition, and computational physics, pixel detectors, gamma-ray astrophysics.

The field of nanoscale physics is relatively new, quickly expanding, and holds great promise for application in everything from next-generation computation to alternative energy. Research Interests: Narrow-bandgap nanowires for solar cell and electroluminescence applications, Transition-metal doped nanowires, VLS and solution-phase synthesis of nanowires, clean-room device fabrication, characterization techniques such as XRF, EDS, SEM, TEM, and scanning photocurrent microscopy.
